The destruction of three towers of the electrical system in the northwest of Guatemala, for a total of 11 acts of sabotage, has promoted considerations on the appearance of a guerrilla group in the area, although the government have rejected that possibility.
Edwin Hernandez, director of the hydropower plant Xacbal working in the department of Quiché, described it as having "terrorist act" and said that a total of eleven towers have been demolished since last November.
Sabotage hit the electricity transmission line linking the hydropower plant with the national interconnected system, explained the entrepreneur in a statement the company.
"As an association, we can not let this situation without expressing our deep concern. They are acts that are committed with impunity, as the State does not act to catch these criminals," said the newspaper Siglo XXI, the director of the National Generators, Horacio Fernández.
The owner of the Secretariat of Communications of the Presidency, Ronaldo Robles, said that the criminal act could lead to cuts in the electricity service in 11 municipalities of El Quiché and Huehuetenango.
"Despite the initiatives (safety) taken by the authorities, it is clear that the attacks have continued and not has been reached, for the moment, an effective solution to restrain, "he complained in an official press statement.
For his part, Interior Minister Carlos Menocal, has ruled out the existence of a subversive group in the area , affected by civil war that devastated the country between 1960 and 1996, and believes it is more of a group that seeks to build hydroelectric company extortion.
