With all the men and women of goodwill petenera society, the Apostolic Vicariate of Petén, we are dismayed by the cowardly assassination of Mr. Edy Rodríguez Cáceres, Civil Court of First Instance, Coercive Economic, Labour and Social Welfare of the municipality of San Benito Peten. We pray for his eternal rest and we sympathize with his family and all families suffering from the continuing violence in society continues to cause suffering Petén, anger and fear. Similarly, we express our strongest condemnation of this new act of violence and called to respond as a society and State to these continuous strokes the coexistence and the rule of law. Edy Cáceres
The lawyer was a person who worked with ethics and accountability, supported human rights sectors in training processes and was recognized as an excellent university teaching. On the morning of 2/11/1915, he was preparing to go to work for justice, was killed by multiple gunshot wounds and died at the Regional Hospital of San Benito. Faced with this vicious attack of the crime to justice in Petén, we express our strongest condemnation and repudiation, and make an urgent appeal to the appropriate authorities to investigate fully this fact, and that those responsible are brought to justice. Murder any person, and the killing of a legal practitioner with excellent quality as human, not go unpunished. In Guatemala we know that impunity continues to fuel the violence and injustice.
We also urge the authorities to provide protection to judicial officers of the department of Petén. In July of 2010 was killed Daniela Odeza Tení officer of the Court of First Instance Criminal Court on 9 February and was killed on rural health worker Ramiro Chon, who was a founding member of the committee of 15, the representative organization health issue in the municipalities of La Libertad and Sayaxché the Department of Petén. Repeated attacks
operators of justice are an example of the weakness of the rule of law in Guatemala and a sign that they are not the result of common crime. Petenera population and organizations in defense of human rights protection endorse any action that the work of administering justice is not limited in its task of combating impunity. In this situation we urge the district attorney of San Benito Peten, investigate the murder of lawyer Edy Rodríguez Cáceres and urge the authorities, especially the Supreme Court, to redouble efforts to protect judicial officials who have been or may be subject to threats and intimidation.
Finally, we reiterate our commitment, together with other organizations in Petén, to continue working from the Bureau of Justice and Security in the search for better interagency coordination and civil society in order to go to combat violence and impunity, the construction of a society more just and peaceful.
